Recent work

Jobs we’ve done in Rochdale

Damp-related fault-find, Littleborough cottage

The problem
RCD tripping every time it rained, with no obvious faulty appliance.
What we did
Insulation-resistance testing circuit by circuit traced water ingress at an outdoor light and a cellar junction box. Both replaced with correctly rated weatherproof fittings and the affected cable sections renewed.
Result
No further tripping and the customer got a written explanation of the cause instead of a guess.

Consumer unit and remedials, Heywood rental

The problem
EICR failed on lack of RCD protection, an undersized main earth and a damaged cooker circuit.
What we did
New 18th-edition board with RCBOs and SPD, main earth and bonding upgraded to current size and the cooker circuit renewed.
Result
Re-inspected and issued satisfactory, with the landlord holding a valid five-year certificate.

Local knowledge

What Rochdale wiring is usually like

Rochdale has some of the oldest housing stock we work in, long Victorian terraces through the town, Wardleworth and Castleton, stone cottages up towards Littleborough, Wardle and Norden and postwar estates in Heywood and Kirkholt. Age plus weather is the theme here: damp reaching old cabling in cellars, outbuildings and under stone floors and outdoor circuits that were never properly weatherproofed. On an EICR in this area, moisture-related insulation failures are the most common reason for a fail, so we test circuit by circuit rather than assuming the fault is where the symptom shows.

Rochdale questions

Asked by Rochdale customers

Why does my trip go when it rains?

Almost always water reaching a circuit somewhere, an outdoor light, socket or a junction box in a cellar. It is a very common fault around here. We test circuit by circuit to find the actual point rather than replacing parts on a guess.

Do you cover Littleborough, Milnrow and Heywood?

Yes, all part of the normal patch at normal rates, with 24/7 cover for emergencies.

How long does an EICR take?

Most houses take two to four hours depending on size and how many circuits there are. You get the certificate as a PDF, plus anything that failed explained in plain English and priced.
